Artist Statement
A lot of Medina’s work explores the concepts of temporality, manipulation of reality, the body, and existence. They try their best not to [strictly] label their art practice to avoid placing restrictions on themself. Medina is drawn to abstract and experimental art — both theoretically and visually — across all mediums. They are most comfortable using studio arts such as photography, painting, film, performance, sculpture, and mixed media to best communicate these concepts but experimentation remains an important part of their practice. When considering choice in medium, Medina takes into account its relationship to rhythm and movement, specifically the passage of one space to another. Common representations of this in their work are the use of doorways, frames, and windows that act as portals that project desires, dreams, and constructed environments. From an early age, Medina has been fascinated by the perception of reality, identity, and metaphysical phenomena which is why in their work there are often entendres and mirrored manifestations.
In addition, political ideologies and significance are subtly worked into the interpretation of Medina’s work. Much of their work is self-motivated but this does not mean their work is only for themself, Medina strongly believes in the power of self. They create because they are passionate about self-expression and the ways art can be used as healing, an outlet for relief, protest, and self-care. Medina makes art for themself but also for those in search of someone to relate to.
